David Luraschi — The O File

Text by Lewis Chaplin

The O File is a systematic, honest and unfussy reframing of more than twenty years of obsessive image making by French-American photographer David Luraschi.

What is this mysterious O File? Is it O as in the fifteenth letter of the alphabet? One dossier in some mysterious archive that may or may not exist? A rumination on the circular, recurring and unfinished daily practice of sculpting a photographic voice? Or a message from the divine: the distortion of a name, Théophile, friend of God, that has clattered around in Luraschi’s ever-energetic imagination for the last fifteen years?

Luraschi invites you to choose your own adventure in a book that wears its heart on its sleeve, creating a structure where the viewer participates in a sequence that is never fixed. The O File is loose, generous and flexible: an unbound, oversized book of 240 pages that sits between a photographic cadavre exquis and an abstract, chance collision of everything from childhood photographs and street work to fashion outtakes, nudes and personal snapshots.

In The O File, nothing is more important than anything else. Seductive, polished work literally rubs shoulders with scrappy fifteen-year-old iPhone images and fragmented digital scans. Luraschi rejects preciousness with a generous working practice, born of a love for people, collaboration and conversation. The result is both charming and disarming in its refusal to cohere.
